Saint Petersburg Orthodox Doctors Society named after St. Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky) with the blessing of Metropolitan Varsonofiy of Saint Petersburg and Ladoga plans to hold the III International and Scientific Conference “Church and Medicine: Efficient Solutions to Modern Challenges” within the framework of Saint Petersburg forum «Church and Medicine» from September 30th to October 2nd, 2020.

History

In 2020 Saint Petersburg Orthodox Doctors Society named after St. Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky) celebrates its 20th anniversary.

In 2005 the Society held the II International Conference «Church and Medicine: Collaboration between the Russian Orthodox Church and the State on health protection of Russian citizens», which was attended by 275 people from 57 cities of the Russian Federation, as well as honored guests from Greece, USA, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Belarus and other countries.

In 2015 Saint Petersburg Orthodox Doctors Society held the V All-Russian Congress of Russian doctors, which was attended by over 700 people from 95 dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church, including from Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan. The outcome of the V All-Russian Congress of Russian doctors was the glorification of passion-bearer doctor Evgeniy Sergeevich Botkin as the saint of Russian Orthodox Church.

About the Conference

The III International and Scientific Conference «Church and Medicine: Efficient Solutions to Modern Challenges» will be attended by the doctors of various specialties, prominent domestic scientists:

Chuchalin Alexander Grigorievich – ex-chief therapist of Russia, RAS Academician, one of the founders of the Russian Pulmonology School, Chairman of Russian Respiratory Society, Founder of the Pulmonology Clinical and Research Institute of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation,

Bubnova Natalia Alexeevna – Leading Specialist in the field of purulent surgery and lymphovenous pathology, Dr. Sci. (Med), professor of the General Surgery Department of the Pavlov University, Professor of the General Surgery Department, Faculty of Medicine, Saint Petersburg State University, Vice-president of the Lymphatic Society of Russia, Member of the International Society of Lymphologists, Member of the Board of the Russian Specialists in surgical infections;

Khavinson Vladimir Khatskelevich – Chief Specialist in Gerontology and Geriatrics of the Health Committee of the Government of Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation, Dr. Sci. (Med), Professor, Colonel of the Medical Service (retired), Vice President of the Gerontologic Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of European Regional Branch of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics;

Siluyanova Irina Vasilievna – one of the founders of modern domestic bioethics, organizer of biomedical ethics teaching at higher medical school of Russia, Doctor of Sciences in Philosophy, Professor, Head of Bioethics Department of Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Chief Researcher of Research Laboratory «Bioethics and Legal problems of Healthcare», Member of Ethics Committee for the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation;

Mikirtichan Galina L’vovna – Head of Humanitarian Subjects and Biomedical Ethics Sub-department of Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University (the department is the branch of UNESCO Department of bioethics), Dr. Sci. (Med), Professor, Chairman of the Ethics Committee of Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University, Member of the Executive Board of the Medical Historians Confederation, Member of the International Relations Commission of the National Ethics Committee of the Russian Medical Association, and other famous scientists.

The Conference will be attended by priests, representatives of regional branches of Russian Orthodox Doctors Society and the countries of near and far abroad, health workers, medical universities students.

The participation of specialists from various regions of Russia is planned, as well as from Belarus, France, Monaco, Australia, Cyprus, USA, Israel, Great Britain, Italy, India, etc.

Taking into consideration varying degree of complexity of epidemiological situation in Russian regions, the event will be held online:

Day 1 (September 30th): offline (remotely) reports will be posted on the website, which you will be able to explore at any convenient time.

Day 2 (October 1st, 10:00 – 12:00 Moscow time (!)): online communication of all the participants will take place – representatives of regional branches of Russian Orthodox Doctors Society, as well as orthodox doctors from the countries of near and far abroad.

The following issues are proposed to be discussed:

  • Ways and methods of communication between regions;
  • Best practices exchange;
  • Characteristics and specificity of the orthodox doctors’ activities in your region;
  • Interaction issues between the Church and medicine;
  • The creation of a database for experience exchange between regions on the base of Saint Petersburg Orthodox Doctors Society;
  • The latest information on coronavirus infection treatments;
  • Positive and negative examples of pastoral practice in the context of coronavirus infection.

Day 3 (October 2nd): offline (remotely) presentations of medical universities students will be posted on the website.

At the same time, the conference will feature the most interesting reports, made by Saint Petersburg Orthodox Doctors Society during 2010-2020.

 Information support to the event will be provided by the journal “The Church and Medicine”, next printed issue is scheduled for November 2020.

Videos of the reports will be placed on the conference website at appropriate
Section pages. They are to be available on September 30, the first conference day.
Access to the reports of medical students are to be opened on October 2.

How to participate

Reports should be recorded on video and sent to opvspb@mail.ru by September 10. Speech duration – up to 30 minutes.

It is possible to send a printed version of the report with a brief annotation in Russian, no more than 300 characters. The most interesting materials will be published in the journal “The Church and Medicine”(RSCI). Please, read the rules of publication.

Conference working languages: Russian, English, French.

We hope that the St. Petersburg Forum “Church and Medicine” will become a platform for communication on topical issues and experience exchange between Orthodox doctors and clergy, related to medicine.
