The article is devoted to the biography of philanthropist Friedrich Joseph Lawrence Haass (1780-1853), who worked in Russia for a long period of time and was commonly known as Doctor Fedor Petrovich Gaaz. Milestones of his life history are given, including information on the scientifi c activities of F. P. Haass. The statements of Haass and the memories of him by his contemporaries are introduced. The utmost importance is paid to the medical and social activities of Dr. Haass, which are the prime example of Christian love and self-sacrifi ce.
