Heroic deeds of doctors in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945

The report discusses the role of Russian military medicine during the Great Patriotic War, which emerges from personal qualities of a Soviet doctor, whose main feature was the idea of serving the Motherland. The uniqueness of the training methodology for the military medical service at the Leningrad Military Medical Academy named after S. M. Kirov, which was evacuated to Kuybyshev at the beginning of the War, as well as at the military departments of medical institutions is highlighted.

It is stated that the success of military doctor’s work during the war was achieved because of the developed system of step-by-step treatment of wounded and sick. The works of N. I. Pirogov, V. A. Oppel and B. K. Leonardov were important in the development of this program. The main part in its practical implementation was played by the Head of the main military sanitary department E. I. Smirnov.

The historic materials present the activities of outstanding doctors, great scientists, in particular, archbishop Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky), surgeons
N. N. Burdenko, S. S. Yudin, A. V. Vishnevskiy, etc, who have ensured the highest level of professionalism in medical practice. The deeds of military doctors were rightfully called heroic by Marshal I. Kh. Bagramyan.
